Phil's a boomer, boomers don't like enthusiasm with their baseball. Unfortunately boomers are also baseball's primary audience.

He's probably too young to remember that in the 1920s the Pirates used to sharpen their spikes in view of all to see in the dugout, so they'd cut the opposing team better when they slid into them, and Ty Cobb once went into the stands to beat up a handicapped fan who boo'd him. He thinks baseball has pure origins.
