The 2 things Brodie should be able to do are contracts and math.

Latest rumors were Allan will sign for $2.5M.

If you assume Mangum gets $40K and add together:

- 3rd round slot ($667,900)
- Overage ($411,230)
- Savings thus far ($967,800)
- Projected Mangum savings ($447,900)

...it adds up to $2.503 million

I'm supposing, not saying anything with any knowledge,

But suppose the mets made Allen a guarantee, if he's not picked by the 3rd round, they'll take him and offer him 2.5, the max they can offer given their pre-arranged 1st and 2nd rounders. That would allow Allen to go to other teams and demand 4 . . . where, presumably the other team might maybe say OK to 4, or they might say, would you take 3 or 3.2. But if the mets guaranteed Allen 2.5 for the 3rd round while allowing him to try to get more elsewhere, that's pretty sly. That's not a word I use very often in the same sentence as mets.

Why would... I don't get it. Why would he take a guaranteed 2.5 when he could go to other teams and ask for 3.25 not 4

I think he simply fell because no one saw him signing at less than $3m

If Mets don't sign him, they
Step 1: offer Barco the max, which he will likely decline.
Step 1: spread the wealth among McIntosh, Beck, Maldanado, et al.

$2.5 million is alotta meat for an 18 year old kid. I hope this actually comes to fruition. [-o<

2.5 million would be a huge bargain

He was considered the top HS pitching prospect in the draft

4 million demand that he gave was actually a reasonable number -- based on where he was expected to be drafted in the 10-15 pick range

If the Mets can pull off 2.5 -- that would be a huge win

The point is, if he knows he's got a guaranteed 2.5, he can go to other teams and ask for 4, and maybe they say yes, maybe they don't. He'll take the 4 if it's offered. The 2.5 is a fall back option.

Win-win for both sides. Like I said, $2.5 million is an incredible chunk of change for an 18 year old kid. He could go play college, tear his rotator cuff and he's getting chump change in 3 years. Or not. I get it. He could get more. But that's an awful risk to take to see what's behind door #2. Take the money and run

Heyman Tweet:

Mets said on track to sign 3rd and 4th round picks, Matthew Allan and Jake Mangum, possibly this week. Mangum, Miss. St. OF, is senior and his likely below slot deal should help sign Allan, prep RHP from Sanford, Fla. Allan is a U of Fla. commit and his signing would be a coup.
