Cut to as little as 5-10 rounds (wowsers) and pushed back to July based on discussions with possible deferment of signing bonuses.

Are these kids under any sort of protection? Like if they were upset that most people won't get drafted/bonuses, who would advocate on their behalf?

Teams can offer up to 20K for any unpicked player, so if anyone is a fringe prospect, they could probably find a team and get used car money.

The NCAA is extending a year of eligibility so anyone who wants to return to college can. But that's basically it. MLB is in a tough spot, and I don't think draftees have a seat at the negotiating table, so that's probably it.

If it was me, I'd extend spending money lost this year onto the 2020 draft, or give each team two million additional to spend for 2021, but nobody asked me.

Officially set at five rounds. Everyone not drafted that are eligible can be signed for a max of $20,000 and you can sign any number of those guys:

I don’t know how they can enforce a limit of $20K for anyone who went undrafted. Will those undrafted signings count toward team bonus pools? Why didn’t they just have more rounds (20?) saying that every player drafted after rd 5 gets 20K so that the talent gets spread out? The way it seems to be set up, it’s going to be a free-for-all after rd 5 and one team can theoretically sign a bunch of the better players.

There remains a significant divide within the team side on the draft. A majority of front offices were pushing for a longer draft, recognizing the value reaped even in later rounds can be immense. Pushback to keep the draft as short as possible from some owners was strong.

The 10-round proposal the union rejected included an interesting twist: essentially it was two five-round drafts. Meaning teams would not have been allowed to use slot money from R6-10 to pay guys in R1-5. Proposal also limited the number of undrafted players teams could sign.

Yeah, and if you're using the "He's 19" logic, then I guess the best report a scout could give us is:

"I have no idea. He's a teenager. He may go through 5 arm surgeries between now and his 30th birthday. He may add a pitch. He may lose a pitch. He may put on 30 lbs and add velocity. He may put on 50 lbs and eat his way out of the league. I literally have no idea what he is going to be."

But thats not what these guys are paid to do, nor what we are looking for them to do, right?
