Really, Tallahassee CC or signing for $125k is not like Florida State or $125k...
Keep in mind almost nobody gets full, or even half, scholarships. So while it may not sound like a competition, the ability to leave after one year (instead of three), and NOT go deep into debt in case things don't work out, is actually pretty solid leverage.

Do community colleges even use athletic scholarships? I attended a community college and was playing fall ball with the team and I don't think any of the kids were getting any sort of financial aid that was connected to their place on the baseball team. Assuming it's similar for Florida kids attending a Florida community college as it is New York kids attending a New York community college, his tuition is probably as low as a couple thousand dollars.
Not sure about Florida but Tennessee residents can go to Tennessee junior colleges for free. But some schools still have athletic scholarships for out-of-state kids.
