Normally day 3 gets me excited for those HS players we pick that might get a bigger bonus(over the 125,000 allowed) but I don't see that likely happening much this year with the money spent on Allan. But he's likely a better talent then anyone we would get now anyways.

Yeah, I'll take Allan. When is the last time one of those late round HS picks actually worked out (for the Mets)? Serious question, because I honestly don't know.

If by worked out you mean made it to the major leagues, none in the last several years. Jordan Humphreys has probably climbed the prospect ladder the most but injuries have hurt him. Christian James has been decent in the lower levels so far. That's about it. Extreme crap shoot. Which is why Allan is well worth it.

2011 was the interesting year, the year after the slotting system was voted in but the last year where it wasn't implemented. The mets went in big in the HS market that year in the later picks.

They also drafted and signed quite a few later round high schoolers in 2009. It may simply be how the scouting works out.

Looking at HS draftees, 11 and later, only the ones who were signed, or unsigned but drafted in following years and still active:

2007

14, 453: Robert Carson, LHP, Hattiesburg HS (Miss.), L/L, 6-3, 220, 1/23/89
25, 783: (Nicholas) Cole Abbott, RHP, Weber HS (Ut.), R/R, 6-2, 170, 7/17/88
32, 991: Juan Centeno, C, Antonio Luchetti HS, L/R, 5-9, 172, 11/16/89
39, 1190: Alonzo Harris, SS, McComb HS (Miss.), R/R, 6-0, 170, 1/16/89

Carson probably had the highest prospect ranking, Centeno, the best career, but negative WAR overall.

2008

24, 734: Kyle Allen, RHP, Pendleton School (HS), R/R, 6'3", 195, 2/12/1990

Allen was, as I recall, a little bit interesting for a season or maybe two.

2009

13, 404: Zachary Dotson, LHP, Effingham County HS, L/L, 6'1", 180, 10/30/90
16, 494: Chase Greene, CF, West Boca Raton Community HS, R/R, 5'11", 180, 4/22/90
19, 584: Nelfi Zapata, C, English HS, R/R, 6'0", 202, 12/13/90
25, 764: Josh Dunn, 3B, Sickles HS, R/R, 6'3", 215, 12/9/90
30, 914: Jordan Harrison, LHP, New Caney School, R/L, 6'1", 180, 4/9/91 (unsigned drafted 3 years later by Rays, still pitching in minors)
31, 944: Mitchell Haniger, RF, Archbishop HS, R/R, 6'2", 180, 12/23/90, unsigned, drafted 3 years later in 1st round, turned into a good MLB Player so far.
34, 1034: Cam Maron, C, Hicksville HS, L/R, 6'1", 175, 1/20/91
48, 1454: Joseph Mantiply, LHP, Tunstall HS, L/L, 6'5", 200, 3/1/91 (unsigned by mets, made majors last year for 5 innings)
50, 1514: Zachary Godley, RHP, Bamberg Ehrhardt HS, R/R, 6'3", 219, 4/21/90 (undrafted by the mets, 4 war season in 2017)

Haniger is clearly the stud of the bunch. Not sure if negotiations were ever close, but he's gotten MVP votes. He's better than most first round picks.

2010

36, 1082: Jesen Dygestile-Therrien, RHP, Edouard Montpetit HS, R/R, 6'2", 190, 3/18/93 (unsigned by the mets, did see majors in 2017)
40, 1202: Brock Stewart, SS, Normal West HS, L/R, 6'3", 170, 10/3/91 (unsigned by the mets, has seen a few seasons in the majors, negative WAR)

2011

11, 342: Christian Montgomery, RHP, Lawrence Central HS (IN), R/R, 6'1", 230, 11/20/92
13, 402: Robert Gsellman, RHP, Westchester HS (CA), R/R, 6'4", 210, 7/18/93 [GCL Mets]
15, 462: Philip Evans, SS, La Costa Canyon HS (CA), R/R, 5'10", 185, 9/10/92
16, 492: Bradley Marquez, CF, Odessa HS (TX), R/R, 6'1", 185, 12/14/92
20, 612: Mason Robbins, CF, George County HS (MS), L/L, 6'0", 200, 2/1/93 (unsigned but briefly interesting)
21, 642: John Gant, RHP, Wiregrass Ranch HS (FL), R/R, 6'4", 175, 8/6/92
23, 702: Jeffrey Diehl, C, Cranston HS West (RI), R/R, 6'4", 9/30/93
25, 762: AJ Reed, LHP, Terre Haute South Vigo HS (IN), L/L, 6'4", 230, 5/10/93 (unsighed by mets, became a top 100 prospect, seen time in majors)
37, 1122: Craig Missigman, RHP, Olympic HS (NC), R/R, 6'4", 175, 8/5/93

Lots of people here praised the 2011 draft though most of the HS picks didn't work out. There was a lot of excitement over Evans and some of the others and some regret that they didn't sign Reed.

Longshot seems a fair assessment, but there's a handful of major league appearances.
