Per Ehalt

Here's some news:

Per a league source, the price tag on Mets pick Matt Allan is not what is being reported. It's not near the $4 million that has been thrown out.

Mets have said publicly they are confident they can sign him.

I hope that is true. It would make sense why they were so confident they'd sign him.

Same reporter now saying asking price is around 3 million. That would be much easier to get to for them.

College is 3 more years of potentially blowing out your arm and never getting a big pay day. He should take a solid signing bonus now to join an organization that has produced plenty of pitchers over the last 5-7 years with a shot to graduate to one of the best markets in the country to land revenue sources outside of the game.

On the flip side, the Mets are kinda terrible at developing pitchers over the last 5-7 years. New York smells bad and is dirty. You can make a lot of money anywhere if you are good. And college is awesome.

Not to say this is you personally, but easily my least favorite part of the MLB draft is when fans go all rabid dog "SIGN!!!!!!!" at kids and go weirdly pro-team/pro-owners in compelling the kids to just "take the money."

Lets be realistic about what this money is. It sounds like a big number, but it could be the last substantial - or even moderate - or even living-wage-ish - payday you get in this game. So now take that bonus, take out the taxes, spread it over 6 or 7 years, think about what your prospects are at 25 without a college degree if things don't work out - its not exactly the lifechanging amount everyone assumes it is.

There's a lot that goes into these decisions. Lets not get all weird and grimy about herding kids. Hopefully they sign; if not, best of luck to them as sure they know they are leaving a big check on the table for whatever reasons they do.

Not that our skillset is equated, but I will likely have made $1.7m in my entire teaching career when I retire, taxed/deducted at around 40% over time...

$2.5m would be pretty life changing for me! Haha.

Yeah I bet Karsten Whitsen wishes he had signed when picked 9th overall.

I find this talk about Kelenic comical. He's a 19 year old kid who hit .253 at Kingsport
and struck out once a game and people are talking like he's the second coming. Get real people. When you have a chance to get the best reliever in the game who's only 24 and give up Kelenic in the deal, you MAKE that deal. Stop with the nonsense.

deGrom was drafted in 2010 and made his ML debut in 2014. So he’s kinda on the bubble for that time period.

Wheeler‘s development took awhile. Harvey we burnt out. Noah hasn’t been healthy and has taken steps backward this year. Matz is ok. Gsellman is ehh. Gagnon is ehh. McHugh we couldn’t help. Montero got lit up. Fulmer put it together somewhat for the Tigers. Marcus Molina crashed and burned. There’s more I guess.

So we had Jake develop into an ace. Some other guys with good stuff and frustrating careers. I don’t know. It’s not like every pitcher we touch is golden. I think our player development leaves much to be desired.
