Anyone know why Baty was still in high school when he was nineteen years old? That is unusual.

Birthdates can do that. Maybe he had a difficult year... Who knows.

It is not THAT unusual.

One drawback is his age, the scout said. In the fifth grade, Baty was held back a year so he could remain in elementary school an extra year, where his mother was the principal.

Could have been a dyslexia or other health issue...

Sometimes education of your child is paramount...

Or Principal Mom wanted the 5th Grade Baseball Team to be really kick-ass.

There was some kind of study that came out that children who are older than their class when they're young tend to be more successful, so parents everywhere began trying to get their kids held back. 60 minutes did a bit about it.

5th grade for him was 7 years ago, almost exactly the time of the report.

I think the theory has since been discredited, or certainly some doubts have been raised. Many parents were doing it around that time.

The mode is currently to get kids "graduated" early and have them take dual credit as a "senior". Not sure that's a great idea either... I've voiced my opinions on that to no avail. Problem is, cutbacks in faculty nationwide provide bare bones choices for kids at small to medium sized schools.

I find this talk about Kelenic comical. He's a 19 year old kid who hit .253 at Kingsport
and struck out once a game and people are talking like he's the second coming. Get real people. When you have a chance to get the best reliever in the game who's only 24 and give up Kelenic in the deal, you MAKE that deal. Stop with the nonsense.

Saw on Twitter that he is in New York taking his physical and finalizing his contract. He is expected to sign under-slot.

Sounds like they're going to save under a million, which is good but not great.

I think saving anything more than $500K makes Allan all but a guarantee. If it's somewhere between $800K-$1M, then maybe they've got enough to go after a guy like Fowler from the later rounds. Though that also might depend a lot on whether they can sign Allan for $2.5M instead of $3M.
