there was a post and i'm not sure which thread it was in, but it stated that the mets probably won't be able to sign MOST of their hs picks. is this true? and if so then why draft them if they don't believe they have a shot?

Because they're like lottery tickets that pay off more than an easily signed college senior who probably will never get out of short season ball...

what bothers me is that they have money and at times act like they don't.
if they believe some of these kids can make it to the bigs then why can't we go over slot?

We want to be in the 'good' graces of the Commissioner's office! That's what it all comes down to and not be fined.

In one of Keith Law's draft chats (I think), he mentioned that a draft budget is somewhere in between 5-10 million. Usually, we are on the lower end. Last year, of reported bonuses (per BA), we were just under 6 million, which does not include 25 or so without listed bonuses.
Personally, I think our draft budget should be balanced with an IFA budget to be somewhere around $8-10 million in total. Last year I think we underspent because we really did not dip into the IFA market as much.
This year, it feels like they are willing to take more risks, but that may be because they don't have 3 1/1A picks like last year, which is an extra $3 million or so to throw around on the draft. So, theoretically, we could be spending the same amount of money on the draft as last year, but picking up more players because we lacked early round picks. Cheap is relative.
