To be fair a bunch of players would have been released at the end of Spring Training if the seasons opened up on time, but it's hard to think this is going to be good for the long-term health of the game.

I've said this before and its a brutal sentiment to be pushing on a day where a lot of people lose their jobs, but both of these things can be true:

1. The owners are going to save a few hundred K through these moves which is a laughable sum for a bunch of multi-billionaires that hurts these guys way more than this "helps" the owners.

2. The milb/affiliated ball/draft system is stupid and has been for a while. The notion that the future of the sport is dependent on a 40 round draft that actively discourages teams from actually drafting most deserving players because they need to spread their bonus pool around to stock affiliates that house guys who will never play MLB ball is all such a broken circle. MLB should invest more in a milb that is more closely designed around those prospects that should be invested in, with the remainder of guys that typically make up the bottom of A ball and rookie ball rosters moving into unaffiliated ball (which should be expanded to make up for the loss of affiliated teams). The future of the sport isn't in the Appalachian League, its in improving the quality of the ~120 minor league teams that will remain, and figuring out the economics of a 10 or 20 round draft that incentivizes teams to add the most talent possible, not game a bonus pool system over 40 rounds with 30 of those picks BY DESIGN having no chance to even advance to the upper levels of the system.

Yeah that was quite a brutal slam of the organization. Let’s be honest, the sale of this franchise cannot happen fast enough.

Not many players can say they retired with a .300 average. I wonder what happened to him. I get that he wasn't toolsy, but his bat wasn't bad and he could play a few positions. Seems like a useful bench player on the right team.

He stunk. Doubt he’d be treated any better elsewhere

Anyway the owners don’t seem keen on playing ball, not for health concerns but to save money. A shame a bunch of minor leaguers making peanuts also had to be sacrificed

This is a quintessentially jaded view. He should be treated like garbage bc he’s not on a ML track..? Really?! Speaks nothing of the org’s wasting of a high pick on him or the $850K bonus they spent on him.
