The Brooklyn Cyclones will be the Mets Double-A affiliate going forward.

Those aren't Union jobs, so I doubt anyone put up a fight.

More money for the millionaires and billionaires to squabble over.

Removing professional baseball from these second and third tier cities is a foolish thing to do. This is a sad moment for the game... a turning point, and more than likely not a good one for the direction the game is going.

Put Indy league teams in those cities and they can sign local kids who are squeezed out of the minors. Local fans see kids they know. Players can stay at home is needed. For the Kingsports of the world it won't be much difference in the quality of play. Tough for Binghamton who are used to AA level. But now Brooklyn gets a better quality of baseball.

How long has Kingsport been affiliated with the Mets? Has to be close to 40 years.

Losing some of these teams won't have a hug impact on their communities (the Kingston Mets averaged less than 900 fans per game last year), but contracting a team like Binghamton is a huge mistake.

People living in Brooklyn have easy access to the MLB team already, but Binghamton doesn't. MLB is effectively shrinking the amount of the country that has access to in-person professional baseball. That's a huge loss that cannot be replaced with independent ball.

I wonder if Binghamton was a tough call. Mets couldn't get rid of St. Lucie, wouldn't get rid of Syracuse after purchasing it. Wouldn't get rid of Brooklyn, so it may have come down to a choice. Binghamton vs Columbia.

I tend to agree that keeping Binghamton would probably have been optimal. They may have over-cut. I think replacing Kingpsort with an independent league team if there's a market for it is probably fine.

No decision has been finalized yet, and the names of the teams on the chopping block hasn't been confirmed, so we don't know much of anything.

It could be that teams that are shrinking to just four minor league teams each, so the Mets had to chose their most valuable locations. Considering that Brooklyn averages almost twice as many fans as Binghamton per game (which would surely go down with a longer season), that seems like an easy call.

Nationals and Mets are other teams releasing some minor leaguers today, according to multiple sources. The exact number is unclear, but they join Brewers, Mariners as known teams to make cuts.

Some teams have already released 30+ MiLB players over the last few days.

I'm guessing some of these players (if they live in the US) can now file for unemployment, but the international players just lost their income altogether.

Regardless, this is a dirty move by MLB teams to save the equivalent of pennies for their owners.
