Owners now agree to pro rata , propose shorter reg season which so happens to create a mid point of...82 games (back to original proposal).

This will get hammered out this week.

The proposal is in the 50 game range per Passan.

Well for one thing that doesn't factor in the 'new' expenses of having readily available testing for every team, every day. Or sequestering teams at home as well as on the road. So they'll be losing a bit more than what's claimed in the article. And there's no guarantee revenues go back to what they were next year. And not every team's revenue stream is the same. It's a lot easier for the Yankees with YES to survive extended loss of revenue than it is the Brewers and A's.

Owners shouldn't do dumb things like not paying the minor leaguers which is basically a couple hundred thousand dollars per team, especially when teams like the Royals do it and the Yankees don't, and the Nationals have to be shamed into doing it by their own players. But I don't think they're entirely crying wolf either. Both sides have to be more realistic but they hate each other too much to care about anything but not giving a single inch even if it kills or further marginalizes the sport.

The 114 game proposal has been rejected by the league with no counter proposal expected per KenR.

They just started exhibition games in Japan and 2 players have tested positive.

Baseball may yet get bailed out by health concerns in spite of itself.

Meanwhile Martino was thinking an agreement could be reached within days. It sounded to me like he meant the financial side, not just on the health side.

So, players overwhelmingly dug in on not accepting further pay cuts. Owners want a pay cut and less games. Martino is saying if owners agreed to a 65-80 game season with no paycuts the players would concede a number of things ("Two years of expanded playoffs. Mic'd up players on MLB Network. Salary deferrals if the coronavirus prevents postseason play. And the players would drop their request for MLB to open its books.").

I suspect that two things are dawning on both sides. The first is the realization that this isn't 1994. Back then there was no mass unemployment, no thousands reported dead from a virus, and no cities in flames. To walk away from a season based on who gets the bigger slice of an enormous pie is akin to rubbing salt into a gaping wound (how's that for mixing metaphors?)

The second is that no season probably means a deep freeze on roster moves in the offseason. Oh sure a few key FAs will land contracts but lots of guys might start next spring on the unemployment line, or be forced to take minor league contracts. And forget endorsements. Baseball and baseball players will become radioactive. For the teams, those advertisers that survived last summer without spending on baseball will no doubt be scrutinizing the impact. Plus will they want to advertise with a low-life sport such as MLB? Are the in-stadium advertisers going to get a make-good?

They'll play this year. After all, both sides want to keep their powder dry for the fight that is coming after 2021.

I was also reading an article where the NHL may realize that though counter-intuitive they may be better off running next season into the summer, so their early season doesn't compete with NFL and their playoffs miss some NBA playoffs. Now with no baseball, or baseball being a pariah they could expand their market and get more revenue from the networks for the post season.
