Nice walk-off by Alonso.

I agree Genmet, it’s ride or die with Diaz. Demote him from closing sure, but the stuff is too good to give up on him.

Good win. This team has some real fight.

On the human side I feel terrible for Diaz. It's an extraordinary season for him in every negative way. On the baseball side, the Mets would be imprudent to trade him this winter. His value will never be lower - he is 25, throws 100 mph, and has a 57 save MLB season under his belt.
They have to try to get him back to elite status. It may never happen, but you don't give up on an arm like his - especially when he makes no money.

I agree with all of this. He has the raw talent to be a top reliever (and he already has had a league leading season), so they need to try to fix him. It's obvious which pitches of his work and which don't. The Mets need to work on rebuilding him. If next year is another dud, then it might be best for both sides to move on. But giving up after one really unfortunate year would be a mistake.

Mickey is kinda right though. Besides Lugo and Wilson this team has nothing reliable in the pen. Not like I trust Sewald or Familia or Avilan to close out last night or in a big spot going forward. So I kind of agree with Mickey. If the Mets hope to make the postseason, Diaz will need to right the ship.

There’s a serious flaw in the logic here. It’s not as if he can just flip a switch. He’s been getting hit harder than any pitcher in baseball. The K’s are nice but largely irrelevant if they come with a nightly blast.

Think of it in hitters’ terms... you can accept a high K rate from a batter as long as he hits for power otherwise. From a pitcher’s standpoint then, that doesn’t work. Right now, there’s clearly no easy fix for Diaz so he’s got to be limited to low lev situations bc he’s just gaslighting everything else when it matters.

It's September 7th. He's not righting anything this year. Beyond the pitch execution, the dude has to be mentally fried right now.

For his and our sakes get him off the team for the rest of 2019. You cannot, CANNOT pitch him in close games versus ANYBODY right now. Let alone close PLAYOFF games?

I find this talk about Kelenic comical. He's a 19 year old kid who hit .253 at Kingsport
and struck out once a game and people are talking like he's the second coming. Get real people. When you have a chance to get the best reliever in the game who's only 24 and give up Kelenic in the deal, you MAKE that deal. Stop with the nonsense.

Yeah. He’s probably not going to get better this year. But what’s the alternative? Sewald last night? I’ll take my chances with Diaz. And I’ll probably get burnt. But cmon. Sewald isn’t closing last night either. Nor Familia.

I know it’s flawed logic. But what’s the alternative here?
